Cats can be very particular about their litter. Switching to a new type of cat litter—whether from clumping to non-clumping, clay to plant-based, or scented to unscented—requires patience. A sudden change can lead to accidents outside the litter box or stress for your cat. Here’s how to make the transition smooth and stress-free.

Cats are sensitive to texture, scent, and feel. Switching abruptly may cause your cat to refuse the litter box. Instead:
Start slowly: Mix 25% new litter with 75% old litter in the box.
Increase gradually: Over 7–10 days, gradually increase the proportion of the new litter until the box contains 100% of the new type.
Tip: Watch your cat’s behavior. If they avoid the box, slow down the transition.
Cats are more likely to accept a new litter if the box is consistently clean.
Scoop waste at least once daily.
Wash the litter box thoroughly if switching from a scented to unscented litter to remove strong odors that might confuse your cat.
Even when changing the litter type, keep other factors consistent:
Same location: Place the new litter box in the same spot.
Same box: If possible, use the same litter box. Cats often resist a completely new environment.
Add multiple boxes: If you have multiple cats, provide a separate box with the new litter to prevent territorial issues.
Monitor your cat closely during the transition:
Signs of stress include avoiding the box, scratching around it, or urinating elsewhere.
Reward your cat with praise or treats when they use the new litter. Positive reinforcement helps them adapt faster.
Clumping vs non-clumping: Some cats prefer soft, fine clumping litter over rough non-clumping types.
Scented vs unscented: Many cats dislike strong fragrances. Unscented litter is usually safest for sensitive noses.
Material: Clay, tofu, wood, or corn litters all feel different. If your cat is hesitant, you may need to experiment with textures.
Switching litter is not always instant. Some cats may take up to two weeks or longer to fully adjust. Avoid punishing accidents; instead, continue offering positive reinforcement and a clean, accessible litter box.
